Grand Master Choi, a three time Korean National Champion, is one of a very select few martial arts practitioners world wide having achieved the rank of 9th degree Black Belt in Taekwondo which is officially certified by the Kukkiwon (World Taekwondo Federation Training Headquarters in Seoul, Korea.). His other accomplishments include an 8th degree in Hapkido and a total of 23 Black Belt degrees in other forms of Martial Arts. He is also the only Taekwondo Grandmaster in Maryland to achieve both Grand Master level and receive his Ph.D. in Physical Education. Grand Master Choi is the founder of Lion Choi's Martial Arts and has over 50 years of experience. His classes are conducted with professionalism and expertise in traditional and Olympic Martial Art style. Grand Master Choi is a great man full of pride and dignity for the Martial Arts. He has surpassed many goals in Martial Arts history and continues to revolutionize the way it is practiced and perceived. His achievements and accomplishments include:

 

Taekwondo History:

  • Grand Master Bok Sung Choi started Taekwondo with the Chang Moo Kwan Association in 1956.

  • Started the very first Taekwondo Team at Myung Ji University (Seoul, Korea) and named Captain (1965).

  • Graduated at Myung Ji University in Physical Education with a full scholarship (1972).

  • Demonstration Team and Taekwondo Instructor of Korean ROTC in 1968, while serving in the Korean Army.

  • Participated in Taekwondo demonstrations for Prime Minster of Switzerland (1971), U.S. Vice President Agnew (1970), U.S. Secretary of State Rogers (1969) and the King of Malaysia (1969) during their visit to Korea. 

  • Grand Master Choi opened his first Taekwondo School in Seoul, Korea (1972).

  • Immigrated to the United States of America in 1977 and opened the very first Lion Choi’s Taekwondo school in Belair, MD in 1978.

  • President of the Maryland State Taekwondo Association 2nd term.

  • President of the Korean Taekwondo Masters’ Federation of Greater Washington (1999).

  • Served as an advisor at the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney, Australia.

  • Consultant to the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) on the design of multi-million dollar Taekwondo training facility and museum (2000).

  • Moogunghwa U.S. Taekwondo Grandmaster Society member (2001) 

  • Personally invited the World Taekwondo Federation President Dr. Chungwon Choue to U.S.A (2005).

  • VIP and advisor at the 2005 World Taekwondo Championships in Madrid, Spain.

Championship Titles:

  • First Place: 52nd Korean National AAU Championship (Flyweight Adult Division) in 1971. 

  • First Place: 48th Korean National AAU Championship (Flyweight Adult Division) in 1967.

  • First Place: 46th Korean National AAU Championship (Flyweight Division) in 1965.

Honors and Awards:

 

  • Numerous appreciation citations from the World Taekwondo Federation and the United States Taekwondo Union.

  • Recipient of award from Governor Paris Glendening, Governor William Donald Schaffer, Mayor Kurt Schmoke and Baltimore City Police Commissioner (1991-1998).

  • Invited to meet with President of South Korea Kim, Dae Goong (1999).

  • Received his Doctrine Degree in Physical Education (2004).

  • Grand Prizewinner for best Grand Master at the World Hwarang Festival in Jin Korea (2004).
